Travel information
Everything you need to get to Adelaide, get around, and arrive ready for a week of science – and a little winter weather.
Quick facts
Reaching Adelaide
Adelaide Airport has direct international services from Asia, the Middle East and New Zealand, plus frequent domestic flights from every Australian capital. There is no airport rail line – but you won't need one.
Arriving by rail? The Ghan and Indian Pacific stop at Adelaide Parklands Terminal in Keswick, about 3 km from the city.
Getting around Adelaide
Adelaide's city centre is flat, compact and mostly free to get around. Most of what delegates need is inside the square mile.
Free tram zone
Free between South Terrace, the Entertainment Centre, Festival Plaza and the Botanic Gardens – including Victoria Square. Just hop on.
Free City Connector
Routes 98A/98C loop the city and North Adelaide daily; 99A/99C loop the CBD on weekdays. Roughly 7:00 am – 7:15 pm, later on Fridays.
Tap and pay
Beyond the free zone, tap any Visa or Mastercard, phone or watch on buses, trains and trams. Cash isn't accepted on board.
Visitor metroCARD
Three days' unlimited travel (currently $28.90) from the InfoCentre at Adelaide Railway Station, or as a pass in the Buy & Go app. Handy for Glenelg.
Walking
About twenty minutes corner to corner. Rundle Mall is around ten minutes north of the venue; the Central Market is one block west.
Day trips
Heading to Victor Harbor, Rapid Bay or the wine regions? Hire a car at the airport or join a tour – see the Destination page for ideas.
Visas & letters of invitation
Australia does not issue visas on arrival. Your visa must be granted before you board, so make it the first thing you organise.
Do I need a visa to attend AMSA 2027?
Yes, unless you hold an Australian or New Zealand passport. Every other delegate needs a visa granted before departure, however short the visit.
When should I apply?
At least three months before you travel. Many applications are decided within days, but those needing extra documents, biometrics or checks can take considerably longer.
Which visa should I apply for?
If you are attending or presenting without being paid by an Australian organisation, one of these visitor visas will usually cover you, depending on your passport:
- eVisitor (subclass 651)
- Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
- Visitor visa – Business Visitor stream (subclass 600)
Confirm what applies to you with the official Visa Finder.
What if I'm being paid to speak, exhibit or work?
Visitor visas don't cover paid work. You will most likely need a Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) or a Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400). Both take longer, so allow extra time.
How do I get a letter of invitation?
- Register for AMSA 2027 (registration opens in early 2027) and pay in full.
- Email the Conference Secretariat at amsa2027@asnevents.net.au with your full name as shown in your passport, passport number, nationality and date of birth.
- Allow several working days for the letter to be issued.
A letter supports your application but does not guarantee a grant. The Secretariat cannot advise on, expedite or appeal visa decisions.
Before you go
Pack for winter
Layers, a warm jacket and an umbrella. Evenings can drop below 10°C, and conference rooms vary.
Heading underwater?
Gulf waters are cold in July. Plan on a thick wetsuit or drysuit, or hire gear from a local dive shop.
Biosecurity
Australia has strict rules on food, plant and animal products, and field equipment. Declare anything you're unsure of on arrival.
Travel insurance
We strongly recommend insurance covering cancellation, medical care and personal belongings.
Power & plugs
230 V, with Type I plugs (two angled flat pins). Bring an adaptor for your laptop and charger.
Emergencies
Dial 000 for police, fire or ambulance from any phone in Australia.
